What is Ñandutí?

ree

Ñandutí is a unique handicraft that involves stitching fabric in a manner akin to embroidery and weaving intricate patterns, reminiscent of printed designs. It's a traditional craft of Paraguay, passed down from generation to generation.

The term "Ñandutí" originates from the Guarani language, meaning "spider web." Its roots trace back to Arabia, arriving in Paraguay via the Canary Islands and Spain in the 17th to 18th centuries. Originally known as "Sol Lace" in Spain and "Tenerife Lace" in the Canary Islands, it became known as Paraguayan Lace called Ñandutí . In Paraguay, individual lace artisans incorporated local flora, fauna, and everyday items into the designs.

While influenced by European needlepoint lace, Ñandutí evolved uniquely in Paraguay, featuring different colors in contrast.
